Project "Something"

I do not know exactly who will find this document. I was lucky enough to discover this info myself. Who am I, exactly? You don't need to know, strangers. However if this document spreads successfully then you are likely living on a different planet than I am.

Besides knowing that you're reading a document from an anonymous life-form that could be from any race and any planet, what is the purpose of reading this?
Well, I'm here to carry out a message that could change the course of history. You see, the Phobians, I'm sure you heard of them, have been working on a research undertaking they codenamed: Project Something. By means that don't concern you, I managed to find logs from the scientists after the project was over.
My only purpose here is to show you what I have uncovered...

As soon as we discovered the potential of our discovery, Redsnapper declared it unsafe to continue any related research in the Hive Lab on Mars. He has reassigned all Phobian Xenobiologists to a new location. The new location is in a region of the Circinus Sector with no inhabited planets. Our planet of choice: SN-401, a medium-sized planet with jagged rocky mountains. We had a lab there before, but it was decommissioned a while back. It shouldn't take long at all to reoccupy and our research will continue there. Being shipped there shortly. Signing out.

The Xenobiologists are here now aboard the Circinus Runner, aptly named after the sector it's taking us to. ETA is about one day. The ship itself is a cargo ship about half the size of a battleship and only basic weapons. The twin lasers on the front are kind of a "just in case an army of Caters sends a kamikaze attack" thing. They probably would if they ran into us, but that's really unlikely. Materials aboard: 100 standard laser staffs, 20 Samurai plasma rifles, 42 self-sustaining nuclear cells, 9000 crystals, 1 explorer vessel, 5 hyper carriers, 20 FPCs, 4 IGN/PBN router-servers (3 of them are backups), materials to refurbish the lab, various research equipment, about 500 Xenobiologists, and 1 dentonator to destroy every trace of our work in the case of an invasion. Just hope that we never use that last one. More supply will be sent if needed.

Arrived at SN-401 about 20 minutes ago. We are beginning to clean out the lab as well as make a map of it for general use (whoever used it before didn't bother making a map. They were also very disorganized). The power system seemed like a problem, but it's working just fine. We just needed to switch it on. Lab is connected to ship via tube-bridges. The biggest room of the lab: The bio-dome. The other rooms of the lab are actually built around it. The ecosystem within the dome simulates a coniferous forest. It is about 4km wide. There's a few animal species that prove the dome is stable; they wouldn't last one week on the normal conditions of the planet. Research will begin once the unpacking is done. The dome will be important later.

A little progress has been made, but not anything significant. We have made some archaebacterial life-forms that died easily, then some other microlife that were too acidic to do anything with. Then countless others couldn't even hold a cell shape long enough to be considered life at all. Biosynthesis is tricky business. It's a wonder how others with our jobs actually created a viable plant species once....

BREAKTHROUGH!!! While I was away typing the last log a discovery has been made. -_- thanks. We have created a protist life-form that seems to be thriving so far. It has high adaptive and regenerative potential. Survives in liquid boron and on most solid surfaces. Next step is to put it through some not-so-natural selection and see what it is capable of.

Our micro-species has been put through some tests. Large amounts of its population do not survive, but the ones that can adapt are evolving unnaturally fast thanks to us. Each generation's DNA structure is more complex than the last. They are beginning to become predatory to other microorganisms that we add to their environment. Including some bacteria that are deadly diseases for most races. They also completely absorbed and diffused the prion samples of Descolada we exposed them to. Every virus we've tested on them ignores their presence and vice versa. So far they are immune to any form of infection and could actually cure other races, even with Descolada. The subject species has been named Atruk(s)

We exposed several of our Atruk samples to beta radiation. About 30% of them died, but the rest appear to be getting more potent. One strain of them has evolved to be multicellular. Although still microscopic. We will continue to push this species to its limits and use beta radiation.

Evolution is appearing to favor the multicellular strain, as they are reproducing far more rapidly than the other strains. We're keeping samples of the unicellular kind for storage, since they're beginning to die off. They may be a vital cure in the next outbreak, hoping there is not one that is.

Other than the ones we stored away, all the unicellular Atruks are long gone. Meanwhile the others are becoming rapidly more complex. They have formed bodies now, which are scorpion-like with translucent skin. They are of course still microscopic, but I've seen a couple of the oldest matured ones that are actually visible to the naked eye (you kind of have to squint though). They seem to care less about the cells they preyed on before and prefer to eat meat. They will eat plant life too, but only if there is nothing else available. I feel like I'm one of the only ones here who is slightly concerned by their carnivorous trend.

|__=>Log Entry #10: 9.10.6110 15:00 SCT<=__|
The Atruks have evolved to the point where they classify as animals, and we have had to move them outside into the biodome. The evolved ones, now called Mesoatruks, are just under half a meter in size, and they still have kept their translucent scorpion morphology. They will kill rodents and other small animals for food but they all but ignore the presence of any larger creatures. I can see a few of them through the window trying to climb a tree...

|__=>Log Entry #11: 9.29.6110 17:00 SCT<=__|
If we just let the Mesoatruks live a life of running around, breeding, and eating small animals without a care, we wouldn't be doing our jobs. We let loose a small population of Lyger Cats native to Trin'Ackisti into the dome. They started overpowering and killing the Mesoatruks. The ones that can climb trees managed to escape death and reproduce. They recognize Lyger Cats as predators now and are using innovative ways to outsmart them. We thought they were doomed at first but now we have high hopes for them. We will continue to keep our subject species on its toes so it can grow smarter and stronger.

Mesoatruks are figuring out how to form packs and coordinate together to overpower and kill their Lyger predators. They seem... excited for their victory, almost. This is strange as they've never shown any form of emotion before. They're also getting bolder and more adventurous, willing to do potentially dangerous stunts.

After some predation, beta radiation, simulated plagues and natural disasters, the Mesoatruks are adapting as fast as ever. A clan of them has adaptations to stand upright. its internal structuring is changed so it can spend most of its time standing up with ease, but they are the same other than that. They are now called Neoatruks. The Neoatruk population is still smaller than that of the Mesoatruks, but they seem to have established themselves as a higher "caste", surely since they have more strength, speed, etc. and can make quicker decisions as a team. We are now required to take safety measures when inside the dome since they will attack us if startled.

We've taken a very small group of Neoatruks away. I don't know where or why. I'm not authorized to know and I don't think I have permission to even mention this on the log, but I'm doing it anyway. Weird that I'm part of something labeled top secret but there's a secret higher than "top". Oh well. I have to do my job. Anyways, the Neoatruk community is thriving, but they are difficult to cooperate with. Brain tests suggest that they might actually be sentient. The fact that they build their own primitive weapons to hunt reinforces this suggestion. We may have just birthed and raised an intelligent race! This is exciting and eerie at the same time. What will they do with their wisdom..?
